Feeling anxious ahead of an important event, such as sitting an exam or a large social gathering, is a normal part of life. However, for some people, anxiety can become overwhelming and never seems to go away. This can be focused around a particular situation, such as social situations in groups, or it can just be an overwhelming sense of anxiety without an obvious source. It may start to manifest in a very physical way with symptoms such as tension, pain in your body and panic attacks. Counselling can help you explore your anxiety and understand how and why it plays out in your life. Bringing in useful tools, which we can try in the therapy room, can also give you some practical ways to manage your anxiety and enable you to live a more fulfilling life.
Depression can negatively affect many aspects of our lives: our work, our close relationships, our self-esteem, our identity. It can often leave us wondering how it came about, trying to understand what triggered it. Sometimes this is obvious to us, such as a bereavement or relationship ending, but often the reasons are not so clear. Through our work together we would aim to understand what you’re experiencing and what might lie underneath it. This will increase your awareness of your unconscious behaviour and thoughts. Another key aspect of depression is often how we relate to others so we will also explore how you experience others in key relationships and try to understand communication patterns that take place, and the feelings that you experience as a consequence.
