According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), three out of four people who take their own lives are men; which is the biggest cause of death for men under 50 in England and Wales. Men are also three times more likely than women to become alcohol dependent (Health and Social Care Information Centre).
Behind these stark statistics are social drivers. Men can often feel ill-equipped when it comes to dealing with emotional or relationship issues, which is often driven by conscious and unconscious messages they received from a young age. Perhaps that they shouldn’t show their emotions, especially when they felt upset, as this would be a sign of weakness. This means they can have a lifetime of not having anyone to speak to when things get tough.
Counselling offers a space to start to explore and understand what lies under emotional and behavioural responses and help live a fulfilling life and hold satisfying relationships. Through increased self-awareness and self-understanding male clients will be able to positively impact how they feel about themselves and how they can get more out of their close relationships.
